Composting Print

Region of Peel, Ontario

The Project

The Region of Peel’s composting facility has a new 60,000 tonne/yr, “In tunnel” composting plant that releases odor bearing exhaust air at the rate of 30,000region-of-peel cfm. This plant needs to meet an extremely stringent odor control requirement of less than one odor unit (OU) at the property line which is about 100 feet away.

The composting facility receives various kitchen and food input, as well as leaf and yard waste, and handles about 250 tonnes/day.

Biorem’s Solution

Biorem installed a covered biofilter utilizing our patented in-organic Biosorbens® media which would allow for the treatment of a wide variety of odor-generating compounds. The odor causing compounds generally coming from the facility include ammonia and mercaptans such as dimethyl disulfide (DMDS). The system is contained in a 20m x 20m separate concrete structure and is comprised of two cells each treating 15,000 cfm.
