 H.J. (Hank) Vander Laan

H.J. (Hank) Vander Laan, Board Chair 

Mr. Vander Laan founded Trojan Technologies Inc. in 1976, acquiring the patent for a small ultraviolet device for private water supply applications. Building upon that concept he developed a company that is now a global leader in its field with revenues well in excess of $100 million per year. In 2004 Trojan Technologies Inc. (at the time a TSX listed company) was acquired by Danaher Corporation. Mr. Vander Laan has continued to work with Trojan Technologies Inc in the role of Senior Advisor. Prior to founding Trojan Technologies Inc., Mr. Vander Laan was Vice President of Canadian Cable Systems Limited (currently Rogers Cable Systems) from 1969 to 1977, where he was responsible for technical operations and personnel for the largest cable television company in Canada.

 Robert B. Nally

 Robert B. Nally, B.A.Sc., M.A.Sc., P.Eng.

Mr. Nally is the Chief Operating Officer of CVF Technologies Corporation and has been a Director of CVF Technologies Corporation since September 1995. From 1989 until 1995, Mr. Nally was the Vice-President and Secretary of Canadian Venture Founders Management Limited and one of its co-founders. Prior to that time, Mr. Nally provided commercial development consulting services to the University of Waterloo as Technology Transfer and Commercial Development Officer. He worked for NCR Canada Ltd. for 10 years as Manager of Strategic Planning and New Business Development and Director of Engineering. He obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering and a Master of Science degree from the University of Waterloo.

 Bernardo H. Llovera

Bernardo H. Llovera, B.A., Dip., MBA

Mr. Llovera joined Expansion Capital Partners in 2003 and has been a General Partner since January 2004. Mr. Llovera has more than ten years of investment management experience, primarily in expansion stage venture capital. He was a Senior Vice President at GE Equity, the private investment arm of the General Electric Company where he headed the Enterprise Solutions Group and co-headed the Telecommunications Group. Prior to joining GE Equity in 1996, Mr. Llovera was a Senior Manager with the Sara Lee Corporation at their headquarters in Chicago where he focused on strategic planning and mergers and acquisitions. Mr. Llovera holds a BA in Engineering Sciences from Dartmouth College, a Diploma in Accounting & Finance from the London School of Economics and an MBA from the Kellogg Graduate School of Business Administration, at Northwestern University.

 Peter A. Bruijns

Peter A. Bruijns, MBA,P.Eng, President & CEO

Mr. Bruijns has a degree in Mechanical Engineering, is a Professional Engineer and earned a MBA from the Ivey School of Business.  He has over 15 years of relevant senior management background and offers a strong experience base from which to lead.  Mr. Bruijns joins BIOREM from his post as President of the Stiller Centre for Technology Commercialization where he guided numerous biotechnology startup companies in their successful development and gave the center a premier national reputation.  Previous to this role, Mr. Bruijns led a pioneering joint venture in Beijing, China in the healthcare field where he was responsible for negotiations, financing, design and construction as well as on the ground operations management of the first private hospital in China.  Rounding out his experience were executive leadership roles in construction, sales, manufacturing, design & engineering with companies such as Sutherland-Shultz and Glendale RV.

 Stephen V. Ardia

Stephen V. Ardia

Mr Ardia, was CEO of Goulds Pumps from 1985 to 1994 after serving the company in a variety of executive positions for over 20 years. Mr. Ardia currently serves as Chairman of two of Champlain Capital Partners portfolio investment. Champlain Capital Partners is a private equity fund based in San Francisco. He served as the Chairman of the Board of Maxim Technologies (Dallas, Texas) as well as eLogic Group LLC (Rochester, NY) and a member of the Board of Trojan Technologies (London, ON)

Ed Corbett, B. Comm., CMA, Chief Financial Officer

Mr. Corbett brings more than 15 years of senior financial and operational experience in Professional Services and technology-related companies to BIOREM. Ed has over 10 years of experience specializing in business consulting and closed over $350 million of transactions through joint ventures, technology licensing and financings. Ed grounded his career at GE Canada as well as a major insurance company. Most recently, he served as Director of Finance, Customer Delivery for RightNow Technologies where he was responsible for the budgeting, forecasting and operations of the Professional Services group across North America and internationally. Previously, he was the financial officer and Secretary to the Board of Directors for Serco DE. Ed holds a Bachelor of Commerce from Dalhousie University and a CMA accounting designation.

Brian P. Herner, B.Sc., Senior Advisor

Mr. Herner was President and CEO of BIOREM from 1995 to 2007 and a member of the Board of Directors from 2005 to 2007. Mr. Herner has extensive general business management experience in the environmental field, including, as Business Director for Chemviron, Vice-President of Zenon Environmental Inc. President of General Chemical Ltd. and General Manager of Calgon Corp. Canada Ltd. Mr. Herner obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Math/Chemistry/Physics from the University of Manitoba.

Hadi Husain,PhD, Vice President Research

Hadi received his PhD in Chemical Engineering from the University of Birmingham in the UK in 1972 and has extensive experience in research and technology development. Hadi spent 20 years with Wardrop Engineering in Winnipeg and Toronto where his latest position was Director and Vice President of Process and Environmental Engineering. Since 1995, Hadi was Director of Process R&D with Zenon Environmental where his responsibilities included development of new wastewater, water and process applications of membrane technologies and for developing new membrane based products.

Ian H. Borrell, Vice President Sales & Marketing

Ian joined BIOREM in 2006 with 18 years of experience in the air pollution control and water treatment business. He has spent the majority of his 14 year career with Wheelabrator/US Filter in Milton and Burlington.  Ian managed and directed the day to day operations and sales efforts of the Wheelabrator Canada Aftermarket Group. Ian then moved on to become the Sales Manager of the Wheelabrator/USFilter Environmental group. In his current role he is responsible for North American Municipal Sales.

Derek S. Webb, P.Eng., MBA, Vice President, Business Development

Derek joined BIOREM in 1996. He holds an honours degree in environmental engineering at the University of Guelph, where he focused his studies on air pollution control.  Derek has intimate knowledge of biological air pollution control equipment, having been directly involved with the design, manufacture and management of over 100 biofilter installations, throughout the United States and Canada.   Derek also has considerable experience with the custom design of pretreatment systems required for optimized biofiltration processes. His focus continues to be on supporting the sales force on the optimization of biological treatment processes and on developing new markets.

  mark-hawley Mark K. Hawley, P.Eng., Vice President of Operations

Mr. Hawley brings nearly 20 years of manufacturing and engineering related industry experience to Biorem. He has spent the last 7 years with Bangor Metals Corp, who design and manufacture complex products and systems for off-road OEM’s in mining, rail, defense and forestry. During his tenure at Bangor Metals Corp., he was an integral part in successfully growing the company’s annual revenues from $15 million to more than $75 million through the integration of a number of acquisitions and addition of new facilities, technologies, products and processes.  His strong expertise in strategic and operational planning, organizational development, process reengineering, new product development and business amalgamations and acquisitions will be a great addition to our senior management team. Mark is a Professional Engineer and holds a Masters in Management Science from the University of Waterloo and a Bachelor of Science from the University of Toronto.
