Mid-Halton Wastewater Treatment

The Project

The Mid-Halton wastewater treatment plant is situated approximately 0-5mid-halton-for-website-2 km away from residential properties and recently underwent an expansion which included the construction of an approximately 1,500-square-metre biosolids building, a 300-square-metre blower building, the excavation and installation of two aeration tanks and two new secondary clarifiers. Due to this expansion and the close proximity of the residential areas, the treatment facility was in need of an odor control system to control the odorous compounds from the biosolids building.

Biorem’s Solution

Biorem supplied two modular biofilter systems, both utilizing our patented in-organic Biosorbens® media.  The systems are each treating an air flow rate of 3,500 cfm and have an EBRT of 45 seconds.
The systems have been operational since November 2009 and continue to have a removal rate of 99% for hydrogen sulfide while also removing other odorous organic compounds.

Pine Creek

The Project

The City of Calgary experienced significant growth in recent years which has had a sizable impact on their wastewater treatment systems.  This growth has lead to an increase is wastewater flows and loads entering the city’s treatment facility.  The Pine Creek Wastewater Treatment Facility was built to accommodate Calgary’s immediate and long-term wastewater treatment needs and to help alleviate existing pressures being placed on the two current wastewater treatment plants.

The plant was looking for emissions control equipment to mitigate the effects of offsite nuisance odors. The system selected was required to ensure that odor levels were “barely perceptible” at the fence line, ensuring neighborhoods would not be affected by offensive wastewater odors.

Biorem’s Solution

Three separate Biorem biofilters were installed to treat the emissions coming from the headwork’s structures; primary treatment processes, and dissolve air floatation (DAF) equipment. The systems were designed with Biorem’s Biosorbens® media to meet the required performance specifications of 100ou/m3 plus the baseline residuals odor or less.

The system performance is show in the table below.
